Providing space for reflection and sharing experience, exploring change and participatory engagement. The process improved participant’s practice while gathering knowledge and ideas. A one-day #CoLab with the Impact Hub exploring the question: what is Birmingham doing towards the elimination of violence against women and girls? A collaborative multi-stakeholder workshop involving 30 participants from civil society, academia and local government to explore and share the current situation, strategies and possibilities. Methods included discussions, mapping and constellation work to draw out the issues and generate creative and innovative thinking. Participants reflected that it was unusual to have the space to share practice and collaborate and appreciated the opportunity to connect. Generated possibilities for future collaborative approaches and strategies to address violence against women and girls.. .

Building core skills

Learn more

A series of four daylong workshops for frontline public sector staff, exploring experiences together, sharing and developing strategies which could be used to defuse, de-escalate and manage difficult situations. This was in response to an increase in the number of reported ‘conflict incidents’ between public sector employees and members of the general public. Offering a safe environment to share challenges and discuss different ways of handling difficult situations in a productive and healthy way, by sharing experiences, building on practice and scenarios. Reported learning outcomes include greater self-awareness and empathy; recognition and utilisation of personal strengths during challenging situations; stronger alignment between policy and practice and a more rooted appreciation of each other’s role, skills and responsibilities.

Learning Circles

Peer Learning Circles are a structured and facilitated approach to enable small groups to address complicated issues by meeting regularly and working collectively. They are based on the principles of action learning, which is a powerful approach for working on difficult problems in professional practice and helps set standards for good practice in organisational learning.

"Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other"
